Mysore (Mysuru) is the cultural soul of Karnataka — a city of palaces, silks, sandalwood, yoga schools, and the magnificent 12-day Dasara festival. The crown jewel is the Mysore Palace, an Indo-Saracenic masterpiece that lights up with 97,000 bulbs every Sunday evening — one of India’s most magical sights. Best Time to Visit

• October – March — pleasant (15–28 °C). Best season.
• September – October (Dasara) — the legendary 12-day festival climaxes with the procession of decorated elephants carrying the Goddess Chamundeshwari. The single best time to visit Mysore. Book 6 months ahead.
• April – May — hot (35 °C+) but tolerable.
• June – August — light monsoon, lush greenery.

Top Attractions

Mysore Palace (Amba Vilas)

The official residence of the Wadiyar dynasty (1399–1947) — and one of the most visited palaces in the world (after the Taj Mahal). Built in Indo-Saracenic style in 1912 (the original burned down in 1897). 100,000+ rooms decorated with carved teak ceilings, stained glass, mosaic floors, gold-leaf paintings.

• Sunday evenings (7:00–7:45 PM) — illuminated with 97,000 bulbs. Don’t miss this.
• Also illuminated on national holidays and during Dasara
• Photography prohibited inside — leave camera at the cloakroom

Chamundi Hill & Temple

13 km uphill — dedicated to Goddess Chamundeshwari (form of Durga). The hill has a giant Nandi Bull (5-m monolith) and 1,000 steps if you want to walk up. Spectacular Mysore views from the top.

Brindavan Gardens (KRS Dam)

19 km from Mysore — the famous terraced ornamental gardens with musical fountains. Best at sunset (fountain show 7:00 PM weekdays, 7:30 weekends). Very Bollywood-esque.

St Philomena’s Cathedral

One of the largest cathedrals in Asia (175 ft tall) — built in 1936 in neo-Gothic style. Beautiful stained glass, especially in morning light.

Devaraja Market & Mysore Silks

The bustling 1900-old produce market for fruits, vegetables, sandalwood, jasmine garlands. Around it, the KSIC Silk Factory (Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation) makes the famous Mysore Silk Sarees with real gold zari — best place to buy authentic Mysore silk.

Mysore Zoo & Karanji Lake

The 1892 zoo is one of India’s best — over 168 species in beautiful settings. Adjacent Karanji Lake has a butterfly park and walk-through aviary.

Jaganmohan Palace & Art Gallery

The earliest royal palace (1861, before Mysore Palace) — now houses Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery with Raja Ravi Varma paintings, Mughal & Pahari miniatures.

Yoga Schools (Ashtanga & Iyengar)

Mysore is the world capital of Ashtanga yoga. The K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI) attracts 1,000+ international students annually for 1-3 month intensives. Several other respected schools too.

Somnathpur Temple & Srirangapatna (day trip)

Somnathpur (38 km) — the most exquisite Hoysala temple (1268). Srirangapatna (15 km) — the island fortress of Tipu Sultan with his Daria Daulat Bagh palace and tomb.

Mysore Airport (MYQ) — limited flights from Bangalore, Goa. Most travellers fly to Bangalore (BLR) 140 km / 3 hr away.

By Rail

Mysore Junction (MYS) — direct trains from Bangalore (3 hr by Shatabdi), Chennai, Mumbai. Vande Bharat from Bangalore is the fastest.

By Road

Bangalore 140 km (3 hr by NH275), Coorg 120 km (3 hr), Ooty 130 km (4 hr). Often visited as a Bangalore weekend trip. See our fleet.
