Kochi (Cochin) carries a 600-year layered history of Portuguese, Dutch, British, Arab, Chinese and Jewish traders — a multicultural identity unlike anywhere else in India. The historic Fort Kochi peninsula holds the iconic Chinese fishing nets, India’s oldest European-built church (St Francis), the world’s first European fort outside Europe (Fort Manuel), and the legendary Paradesi Synagogue in Jew Town. • October – March — pleasant (22–32 °C). Best season.
• December (Kochi-Muziris Biennale, biennial) — South Asia’s largest contemporary art festival. Don’t miss in Biennale years.
• June – September — monsoon. Beautiful and atmospheric but heavy rain.

Top Attractions

Chinese Fishing Nets (Cheena Vala)

The visual symbol of Kochi — 14th-century cantilever fishing nets brought by Chinese traders during Kublai Khan’s era. Best at sunrise (5:30 AM) and sunset. Watch fishermen lower the giant net and try the catch fresh from the seafront stalls.

Fort Kochi Walking Tour

The 16th-century Portuguese settlement — best explored on foot. Highlights: St Francis Church (1503 — India’s first European church, where Vasco da Gama was originally buried), Santa Cruz Basilica, Vasco House, Pierce Leslie Bungalow, Bastion Bungalow and the picturesque Mahatma Gandhi Beach.

Mattancherry & Jew Town

The old Jewish quarter — winding lanes packed with antique shops, spice traders, art galleries and cafés. The Paradesi Synagogue (1568) is one of the oldest active synagogues in the Commonwealth. Don’t miss the spice market for fresh cardamom, peppercorn and turmeric.

Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace)

Built by the Portuguese in 1555, gifted to the Cochin Raja, later renovated by the Dutch. The interior holds some of India’s finest temple murals — scenes from the Ramayana and Krishna Leela painted in earth pigments. No photography inside.

Bolgatty Palace & Island

The 1744 Dutch palace on Bolgatty Island, now a heritage hotel. Reachable by ferry — gorgeous backwater views.

Kathakali & Kalaripayattu Performance

The Kerala Kathakali Centre in Fort Kochi runs daily evening performances — a 90-min show with make-up demonstration, traditional drum performance, then the play. Kalaripayattu (the world’s oldest martial art) is performed at the same venue on alternate nights.

Kochi-Muziris Biennale

South Asia’s largest contemporary art festival — held every 2 years (Dec–April), spanning Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, and other venues. 100+ artists, free entry to most venues.

Marine Drive & Vypin Island Ferry

3-km waterfront promenade in Ernakulam (the modern part of Kochi) for sunset walks. The 10-min ferry to Vypin Island is one of India’s most scenic short ferry rides.

By Rail

Two main stations: Ernakulam Junction (ERS) and Ernakulam Town. Both well-connected to Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai. Kochi Metro extends from station to airport.

By Road
