About Pushkar — The Sacred Town

Pushkar is one of India’s five most sacred Hindu towns — built around a holy lake said to have been created when Lord Brahma dropped a lotus from the sky. The town houses one of the very few Brahma temples in the world, 52 ghats encircling the lake, and hosts the world-famous Pushkar Camel Fair every November. Add the lakeside hippie cafés, holistic-healing rooftops and bohemian bazaar — and Pushkar becomes one of Rajasthan’s most distinctive small-town experiences.

Best Time to Visit

• October – March — pleasant weather. The Pushkar Camel Fair (Nov) is the biggest event.
• November (Kartik Purnima full moon) — the Camel Fair peaks. Hotels triple in price; book 6+ months ahead.
• April – June — too hot.

Top Attractions

Pushkar Lake & the 52 Ghats

The sacred lake at the heart of the town. The 52 ghats are bathing steps, each named after a maharaja or sect. Sunrise and sunset aartis are unforgettable. Note: photography from inside the ghats is restricted; ask permission, and beware of scam “blessing” priests asking for donations.

Brahma Temple

The 14th-century Jagatpita Brahma Mandir — one of just three or four Brahma temples in the world. The red spire and pink-stone walls feature swans (Brahma’s vehicle) and silver lotuses on the dome.

Savitri Temple

Hilltop temple dedicated to Brahma’s wife. A short cable car ride or 30-min hike up — sunrise here is one of the best in Rajasthan.

Varah Temple, Apteshwar Temple, Rangji Temple

The town has 500+ temples — these three are most worth visiting after Brahma. Rangji Temple is in Dravidian South-Indian style — a striking architectural surprise in Rajasthan.

Pushkar Camel Fair (November)

One of India’s most iconic festivals. Originally a livestock trading fair, today it’s a 7-10 day spectacle of 50,000+ camels and horses, folk performances, hot-air balloon rides, the famous “longest moustache” and “matka phod” competitions, and a sea of saffron-clad pilgrims.

Pap Mochani & Gayatri Temples

Smaller hilltop temples on the opposite side of town — quieter views over Pushkar valley.

How to Reach

By Air

Closest airport: Jaipur (JAI) — 145 km / 3 hr drive. Kishangarh Airport (KQH) at Ajmer is closer (40 km) with limited flights from Delhi.

By Rail

Closest station: Ajmer (AII) — 11 km / 20 min drive. Direct trains from Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai, Ahmedabad.

By Road

Jaipur 145 km (3 hr), Ajmer 11 km (20 min), Udaipur 270 km (5 hr). Perfect on the Jaipur–Pushkar–Jodhpur Rajasthan route. See our fleet.

Travel Tips

• 1–2 days is plenty for Pushkar (3–4 if visiting during the Camel Fair)
• Stay near the lake for atmosphere — Hotel Pushkar Palace, Inn Seventh Heaven
• Beware of “Pushkar Passport” scam — pseudo-priests at the ghats asking for “donations”. Politely decline and walk away.
• Combine with Ajmer (Sufi Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti) — easy half-day trip
• Book 6 months ahead for Camel Fair accommodation
• Photography — sunrise from Savitri or sunset over the lake
