Agra is the city of the Taj Mahal — but it’s so much more than a single monument. Once the magnificent capital of the Mughal Empire, Agra holds three UNESCO World Heritage sites within an hour’s drive of each other — the Taj Mahal, the red sandstone Agra Fort, and the abandoned 16th-century Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri.

Beyond the obvious wonders, Agra rewards travellers who linger — the Itimad-ud-Daulah (“Baby Taj”), the moonlit Mehtab Bagh from across the Yamuna, the marble inlay (pietra dura) workshops, and the world-famous Mughlai cuisine. Even after a hundred visits, the Taj at sunrise still leaves you speechless.

Best Time to Visit

• October – March — ideal weather (10–25 °C). Most Bollywood-worthy at the Taj.
• April – June — extremely hot (40+ °C). Best to do the Taj at sunrise.
• July – September — monsoon brings green Yamuna banks but can be muggy.

The Taj Mahal also opens for night viewing on full-moon nights from 8:30 PM – 12:30 AM (plus 2 days before and after) — magical and far less crowded.

Taj Mahal

Built between 1632 and 1653 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World — 22 years of work by 20,000 craftsmen. The white-marble main mausoleum, the four minarets, the inlaid pietra dura precious stones, and the perfectly symmetrical Mughal char-bagh garden — it lives up to every expectation.

Visiting Tips

• Open sunrise to sunset, closed Fridays
• Best time: arrive 30 minutes before sunrise. Crowds peak by 9 AM
• Tickets: ₹50 (Indian) + ₹200 main mausoleum / ₹1,100 (Foreign)
• Children under 15: free
• Pre-book online to skip queues
• Photography is allowed but cameras restricted inside the main mausoleum

Agra Fort (UNESCO)

The red sandstone fortress that was the seat of Mughal power for 300+ years. Inside: Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas, Sheesh Mahal, Khaas Mahal, and the Musamman Burj where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb — with a final view of the Taj where his Mumtaz lay buried. Open 6 AM–6 PM daily.

Fatehpur Sikri (UNESCO)

40 km from Agra — the abandoned imperial capital built by Akbar in 1571 as his royal residence. Buland Darwaza (the world’s tallest gateway), Jodha Bai’s Palace, Panch Mahal and the marble Tomb of Salim Chishti are all here. The city was abandoned within 14 years due to water shortage but remains perfectly preserved.

Itimad-ud-Daulah (“Baby Taj”)

The 1622 mausoleum often called the “Baby Taj” — built before the Taj Mahal and the inspiration for it. Smaller but more intricately decorated with marble inlay.

Mehtab Bagh

The Mughal garden across the Yamuna — the perfect Taj Mahal sunset viewpoint. The Taj is framed by the trees and reflected in the river. Far less crowded than the Taj itself.

Akbar’s Mausoleum at Sikandra

Akbar’s tomb in a 119-acre garden — built between 1605 and 1613. Less visited but architecturally remarkable.

How to Reach

By Air

Agra Airport (AGR) with limited flights — most travellers use Delhi (DEL, 230 km) and drive on the Yamuna Expressway.

By Rail

Agra Cantt is the main station. The Gatimaan Express from Delhi (1 hr 40 min) is the fastest. Shatabdi Express also popular.

By Road

Travel Tips

• 1–2 days for Agra (1 to do Taj + Fort + Fatehpur Sikri at speed; 2 days to enjoy properly)
• Stay near the Taj East Gate (cheaper) or West Gate (closer to fort)
• Tip for sunrise: enter via the East Gate (less crowded), be at the gate by 6 AM
• Don’t believe self-appointed “guides” outside the Taj — book a licensed government guide via your hotel
• Wear comfortable shoes — lots of walking, and entry to inner mausoleum requires shoe covers (provided)
• Skip lunch near the Taj — overpriced. Try Sadar Bazaar instead.
