About Alleppey — The Backwaters

Alleppey (Alappuzha) is the “Venice of the East” — a network of 1,500 km of palm-fringed canals, lagoons, lakes and rice paddies that make up Kerala’s iconic backwaters. Best Time to Visit

• November – February — perfect weather (20–30 °C). Peak season.
• August — Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race (2nd Saturday of August) — book 6 months ahead.
• June – September — monsoon. Backwaters are lush but rainy. Some houseboats stay anchored.
• March – May — warm and humid but houseboats run.

Houseboat Cruise (The Iconic Experience)

The single reason most people visit. A kettuvallam is a converted rice-barge boat with bedrooms, AC, attached bathroom, kitchen, deck and a private chef. Cruise types:

• Overnight cruise (22 hr) — 12 noon to 9 AM next day. The classic. Includes lunch, sundowner, dinner, breakfast.
• Day cruise (8 hr) — daylight only. Cheaper option but no overnight magic.
• Premium 2-bedroom houseboats with sundeck — best for couples or small families
• Vembanad Lake route is the most picturesque (sunset on open water). Backwater village route is more atmospheric.

India’s longest lake (96 km) and Kerala’s largest body of water. Most premium houseboats anchor here at sunset for unforgettable views.

Alleppey Beach & Lighthouse

A 4-km golden beach with the iconic 1862 Alleppey Lighthouse and an old British pier. Sunset here is gorgeous; less crowded than Goa or Varkala.

Marari Beach

15 km from Alleppey town — a quieter fishing village beach loved for its laid-back vibe. Marari Beach Resort is one of India’s best beach properties.

Krishnapuram Palace

40 km away — an 18th-century palace with the famous “Gajendra Moksham” mural (one of the largest single-panel Kerala murals).

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

30 km away (Kottayam side) — 14 acres of mangroves and waterways famous for migratory birds (Nov–Feb): herons, egrets, kingfishers, Siberian crane.

Pathiramanal Island

Tiny mid-Vembanad island accessible only by boat — bird-watching haven, peaceful midday picnic spot.

By Air

Closest airport: Cochin (COK) — 75 km / 1.5 hr drive. Trivandrum (TRV) 160 km / 3 hr is the alternative.

By Rail

Alleppey Railway Station (ALLP) — direct trains from Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Trivandrum. Well-connected.

By Road

Kochi 75 km (1.5 hr), Munnar 175 km (5 hr), Trivandrum 160 km (3 hr), Kumarakom 32 km (45 min). Often visited as a 1-night break on the Kerala loop. See our fleet.

Travel Tips

• 1 night on the houseboat is essential — day cruise misses sunset and night canals
• Premium houseboats (₹15,000–25,000/night) have better food and quieter Vembanad Lake routes — worth the splurge
• Most houseboats do not move at night (state regulation) — they anchor in lagoons
• Book through licensed operators (KTDC, Spice Coast, Lakes & Lagoons) — avoid touts
