About Munnar — The Tea Hill Station

Munnar’s emerald tea hills roll endlessly across the Western Ghats, dotted with colonial bungalows, eucalyptus forests and the rare Neelakurinji flower that blooms once every 12 years (next: 2030). Sitting at 1,600 m above sea level at the meeting of three rivers, Munnar was developed by the British in the late 1800s as a tea plantation — and tea is still its identity today. Add the Eravikulam National Park (home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr), Anamudi (the highest peak in South India), waterfalls, spice gardens, and Kerala’s signature warmth — and Munnar becomes the perfect mountain retreat in God’s Own Country.

Best Time to Visit

• September – May — pleasant (10–25 °C). Ideal for plantation walks.
• December – February — coolest, sometimes frost in early morning.
• June – August — heavy monsoon. Lush, dramatic, but slippery and many roads close.
• 2030 — Neelakurinji bloom (every 12 years) — book a year ahead.

Top Attractions

Tea Plantations & Tea Museum

Munnar’s defining experience. Walk through endless rolling tea estates, learn the entire process at the Kannan Devan Tea Museum (KDHP) — from leaf-plucking to tasting. Don’t miss the morning tea-pluck demonstration and the souvenir shop with single-estate teas.

Eravikulam National Park & Rajamalai

Home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr — half of the world’s population lives here. The 12-km buggy ride up to Rajamalai is breathtaking. Closed Feb–Mar (calving season).

Mattupetty Dam & Lake

13 km from Munnar — a picturesque dam with speed-boat rides and the Indo-Swiss Cattle Farm (a working dairy famous for fresh cheese).

Top Station

The highest point of Munnar (1,880 m), on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. Spectacular views of Theni valley below — best at sunrise. The famous Neelakurinji blooms here.

Echo Point

A natural amphitheatre — shout and hear your voice come back. Lake activities and great photography.

Kundala Lake & Cherry Trees

An artificial lake with shikara-style boats. Cherry blossoms bloom in March–April — Munnar’s “Japan moment”.

Anamudi Peak (Trek)

The highest peak in South India (2,695 m). 4–5 hour trek inside Eravikulam National Park. Permits required from Forest Department; only on guided treks.

Spice Gardens & Sandal Falls

Cardamom, pepper, vanilla, clove plantations on the Munnar-Thekkady route. Combine with Sandal Falls and Lakkam Waterfall.

How to Reach

By Air

Closest airport: Cochin (COK) — 110 km / 4 hr drive. Coimbatore (CJB) 175 km / 5 hr is the alternative.

By Rail

No direct station. Closest: Aluva (110 km) or Ernakulam (130 km). Most travellers come by road from Kochi.

By Road

Kochi 110 km (4 hr — winding ghat road), Thekkady 90 km (3 hr), Alleppey 175 km (5 hr). Best as part of a Kochi–Munnar–Thekkady–Alleppey Kerala loop. See our fleet.

Travel Tips

• 2–3 days is ideal — plantation walk, Eravikulam day, drive to Top Station
• Carry warm clothes Dec–Feb evenings — colder than expected
• Stay at a plantation bungalow for the authentic experience (Tata Tea, Spice Tree, Windermere)
• Roads are winding ghat-roads — take Avomine if you have motion sickness
• Avoid weekends — Bangalore/Chennai weekenders pack the place
• Book Eravikulam jeep early in the morning — daily tickets sell out by 11 AM
• Bring binoculars and a zoom lens for the Tahr
