About Coorg

A taste of Coorg

About Coorg — The Coffee Hills

Coorg (Kodagu) is the “Scotland of India” — green coffee hills, misty mornings, hidden waterfalls, the source of the Kaveri river, and homestay welcomes that taste of fresh coffee, pandi curry (pork) and home-grown spices. The Kodava community here has its own language, distinct cuisine, and martial traditions. Madikeri is the main town; the wider district includes the Buddhist Tibetan settlement at Bylakuppe (one of the largest outside Tibet) and the elephant camp at Dubare. Coffee tourism is the soul of Coorg — and the world’s second-largest coffee producer (after Brazil) is, surprisingly, India’s small Coorg district.

Best Time to Visit

  • October – March — perfect (12–25 °C). Peak season; coffee harvest Oct-Dec.
  • April – May — warmer (28 °C+). Coffee blossoms in March-April.
  • June – September — heavy monsoon — gorgeous greenery, waterfalls in full flow, but slippery.
  • December — coffee harvest at its peak; perfect for plantation experience.

Top Attractions

Abbey Falls

8 km from Madikeri — a 70-ft waterfall in the heart of a coffee estate. Walk through a coffee plantation to reach the hanging bridge view. Best in monsoon (Jun-Aug).

Raja’s Seat

The viewpoint where the Kodava kings once watched the sunset. Beautiful gardens, panoramic views — best at sunset.

Madikeri Fort & Omkareshwara Temple

17th-century fort (now houses the district headquarters and a small museum). Adjacent Omkareshwara Temple (1820) is unusual — Islamic-style domes blended with Hindu architecture.

Talakaveri (Source of Kaveri)

48 km from Madikeri, at 1,276 m. The source of the sacred Kaveri river — the kundike (well) where the river emerges. Aerial views from the adjacent Brahmagiri hilltop are spectacular. Pilgrim site for South Indians.

Dubare Elephant Camp

30 km from Madikeri — Karnataka Forest Department’s elephant camp on the Kaveri river. Bathe and feed the elephants (morning sessions only, ₹400). Coracle rides on the Kaveri.

Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple), Bylakuppe

40 km from Madikeri — one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India (~70,000 people). The Namdroling Nyingma Monastery is breathtaking — three 60-ft gold-plated Buddha statues, exquisite murals, and 6,000 monks chanting.

Mandalpatti Viewpoint

20 km from Madikeri — reached by jeep through forest tracks. Panoramic 360° views of mist-shrouded hills. Best at sunrise.

Coffee Plantation Walks

The essence of Coorg. Most homestays offer plantation walks — learn the difference between Arabica and Robusta, see coffee shrubs in fruit (cherry red), and finish with fresh coffee & cardamom-spice tea.

Iruppu Falls & Brahmagiri

Iruppu (90 km, in Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary) — sacred waterfall associated with the Ramayana. The Brahmagiri trek (1-day) is one of South India’s prettiest.

Nagarhole National Park

50 km from Madikeri — wildlife park with tigers, leopards, elephants, gaur (Indian bison). Jeep safaris from Kabini lakeside resorts.

Local Food (Kodava Cuisine)

  • Pandi Curry — Kodava pork curry with Coorg’s signature kachampuli (vinegar). The defining dish.
  • Kadambuttu — steamed rice dumplings, eaten with pandi curry
  • Akki Roti, Bombe Saaru, Mutton curry
  • Coorgi Chicken with coriander paste
  • Bamboo shoot fry, Mushroom curry, jackfruit curry
