Char Dham Yatra: An Honest Family Account

Namaste. If you’re reading this, you’re probably planning the most important trip of your life. The Char Dham yatra — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath — is not just travel, it’s a vow. We did the full circuit last May with my parents (both 65+), my wife and our two kids. Here’s the honest version no brochure tells you.

Start with Yamunotri, end with Badrinath

The traditional order works best because it eases you into the altitude. Yamunotri at 3,293 m, Gangotri at 3,042 m, Kedarnath at 3,583 m, and finally Badrinath at 3,133 m. Don’t reverse the route — your body will thank you.

For elderly parents, take the helicopter for Kedarnath

The 16-km uphill trek to Kedarnath is brutal. We did it on foot the first time and my mother fainted twice. The second time we booked the helicopter from Phata — ₹6,500 per person, both ways — and she enjoyed every minute. Worth every rupee.

Things to pack that the lists don’t mention

  • Diamox tablets for altitude (consult doctor first)
  • Glucon-D and dry fruits
  • An old pair of socks for the icy Yamunotri kund water
  • Plastic bags for wet clothes after the dip
  • Cash — UPI doesn’t work above Guptkashi

The driver makes the trip

We had Ramesh ji from Gulshan Tours for all 11 days. He knew the local Pandit at every dham, the best dhabas (try the aloo-puri at Karnaprayag), and exactly how slow to take the ghats so my mother didn’t feel queasy. Pick a yatra-experienced driver, not a regular one.

The moment that mattered

At Badrinath, my 78-year-old father held my hand for the first time in 30 years and said “I can go in peace now.” That’s what this yatra does. It’s not about the temples. It’s about what happens between you and your people on the way.
