About Jodhpur — The Blue City

Jodhpur — Rajasthan’s vintage Blue City — sprawls beneath the towering walls of Mehrangarh Fort, with its old-city houses painted in shades of indigo. Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, the city was historically the capital of the Rathore dynasty and the gateway to the great Thar Desert. The combination of the dramatic fort, the indigo-blue lanes of Brahmpuri, the world’s biggest private residence (Umaid Bhawan), and rich Marwari food makes Jodhpur one of India’s most photogenic cities.

Best Time to Visit

• October – March — ideal weather (10–25 °C). The Marwar Festival happens in October.
• April – June — very hot (often above 45 °C). Avoid afternoon sightseeing.
• July – September — short monsoon, dramatic skies.

Mehrangarh Fort

One of India’s largest and most magnificent forts, rising 122 m on a sheer cliff above the city. Founded by Rao Jodha in 1459 and untouched by enemy hands ever since. Inside: Sheesh Mahal, Phool Mahal, Moti Mahal, and the breathtaking museum showcasing royal palanquins, paintings and weapons. Don’t miss the zip-lining over the fort walls — one of the most thrilling experiences in Rajasthan.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

The world’s biggest private residence — built between 1928–1943, it’s still the home of the current Maharaja. Part is now the Taj Umaid Bhawan luxury hotel and a portion is a museum showcasing royal vintage cars, clocks, and the dramatic Art Deco interiors.

Jaswant Thada

The royal cenotaph — a 1899 white marble memorial built for Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Often called the “Taj Mahal of Marwar”. Beautifully reflecting in its lake at sunset.

Old City & Brahmpuri Blue Lanes

The narrow indigo-painted lanes of Brahmpuri (the Brahmin quarter) — once a caste indicator, now Jodhpur’s most photographed feature. Best for slow walks, café stops, and Instagram.

Ghanta Ghar & Sardar Market

The 19th-century clock tower presides over Sardar Market — a maze of spice shops, textile stalls, hand-tied kettling and silver jewellery. Pick up Marwari spices, opium tincture, antique knick-knacks.

Mandore Gardens

9 km from the city — the cremation memorials of Marwar rulers, set in a lush garden park. Quiet and atmospheric.

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

72-hectare ecological park beneath Mehrangarh, restoring native Thar Desert flora. Perfect for early-morning walks.
