About Jaisalmer — The Golden City

Jaisalmer rises from the Thar Desert like a sand-castle dream, its golden sandstone walls catching the dawn and dusk light like nowhere else on Earth. Founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal Singh on a strategic stop on the Silk Route, the city’s Jaisalmer Fort is one of the very few “living forts” in the world — about 4,000 people still live within its walls today. Beyond the fort, the dunes of Sam offer camel safaris, luxury desert camps and Rajasthani folk music under impossibly starry skies.

Best Time to Visit

• November – February — perfect weather (5–25 °C). The Desert Festival happens in February.
• March – June — extremely hot (45+ °C). Not recommended.
• October & March — shoulder months, fewer crowds.

Top Attractions

Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Quila)

Built in 1156, this UNESCO-listed living fort still has thousands of residents in its narrow lanes. Inside: the Maharaja’s Palace, 7 Jain Temples (12th–15th century), and panoramic ramparts. Best explored on foot — get lost in the lanes.

Patwon ki Haveli

A cluster of 5 magnificent havelis (1805) built by 5 Patwa brothers — wealthy traders. Intricately carved sandstone facades, with delicately painted interiors.

Salim Singh ki Haveli & Nathmal ki Haveli

Two more spectacular havelis. Nathmal’s was built by two brothers — each took one half — resulting in subtly different but equally beautiful façades.

Gadisar Lake

The artificial reservoir built in 1367 — a peaceful spot at sunrise and sunset, with chhatris and temples on the banks.

Sam Sand Dunes

40 km from the city — Jaisalmer’s most popular dune destination. Camel safaris, sunset dune dinners, luxury desert camps with folk music. The Desert Festival (February) is held here.

Khuri Sand Dunes

An hour’s drive — quieter, less commercial alternative to Sam. The dunes are smaller but the experience is more intimate. Recommended for photography.

Kuldhara — The Abandoned Village

Mysteriously abandoned overnight in 1825 — 200 years of legends and ghost stories. A photographer’s paradise, especially at golden hour.

Tanot Mata Temple

120 km from Jaisalmer near the Indo-Pak border — sacred to soldiers and tourists alike. The temple miraculously survived bombings in the 1965 and 1971 wars.

Bada Bagh

Royal cenotaphs of the Bhatti rulers in a desert garden — magical at sunset.

Jaisalmer War Museum

Tribute to the 1971 Battle of Longewala — moving exhibits, captured Pakistani tanks, and the legendary “1 vs 65 tanks” defence.

How to Reach

By Air

Jaisalmer Airport (JSA) — seasonal flights from Delhi, Mumbai (Oct–Mar). Closest year-round airport is Jodhpur (290 km).

By Rail

Jaisalmer Junction has direct trains from Delhi (Jaisalmer Express overnight) and Jodhpur. The journey itself is part of the experience.

By Road

Jodhpur 290 km (5 hr), Bikaner 330 km (5 hr). The drive through the desert is unforgettable. See our fleet.

Travel Tips

• 2 days minimum — fort + 1 night desert camp
• Stay inside the fort only if you’re OK with simple comforts (some heritage havelis are atmospheric)
• Best dune time: arrive at Sam by 4 PM for camel ride + sunset
• Book luxury desert camps 3+ months ahead in peak season
• Carry layers — desert nights drop to 5 °C in winter
