About Ranthambore — The Tiger Reserve

Ranthambore is one of India’s best places to spot the Royal Bengal Tiger in the wild. Spread over 1,334 sq km of ravines, lakes and dry deciduous forest, the reserve also wraps around a magnificent 1,000-year-old hilltop fort — making for some of the most cinematic wildlife photography on the planet. Tigers here are famously habituated to jeeps, allowing extraordinarily close sightings. The legendary tigress Machli (now departed) and her descendants have made Ranthambore globally famous.

Best Time to Visit

• October – April — official safari season. Cool, dry, ideal for sightings.
• April – June — extremely hot but highest tiger sighting probability as tigers come to waterholes.
• July – September — park is closed (monsoon).
• Zone 1–5 (core area) opens Oct 1; Zones 6–10 (buffer) open earlier and stay open longer.

Top Attractions & Experiences

Tiger Safari (Jeep / Canter)

The reason everyone comes. Two safaris per day — morning (sunrise) and afternoon. Each safari is 3–4 hours.

• Jeep (Gypsy) — 6 seats, more flexible, better photography. Book 90+ days ahead.
• Canter — 20 seats, cheaper, less flexible. Available closer to date.
• 10 zones total — Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 are best for tigers. Zones 7–10 are buffer area.
• 2 safaris minimum (1 morning + 1 afternoon) for decent sighting odds. 3+ recommended.

Ranthambore Fort

A UNESCO-listed Hill Fort dating to the 10th century — perched 700 ft above the forest. Entry is free and visitors can drive up to the gate. Inside: temples, palaces, ramparts and stunning views of the wildlife reserve. The Trinetra Ganesh Temple here is one of India’s most famous Ganesh shrines.

Padam Talao & Jogi Mahal

The largest of three lakes in the park — surrounded by dense vegetation and frequented by tigers, crocodiles, deer and jackal. The abandoned Jogi Mahal on its banks is one of the most photographed spots in Indian wildlife.

Surwal Lake

10 km from town — winter haven for migratory birds (Oct–Mar). 100+ species including the rare painted stork, sarus crane, flamingo.

Kachida Valley & Raj Bagh Ruins

Inside the park — famous for leopard sightings (less competition from tigers) and atmospheric ruined hunting lodges.

Local Food

• Most resorts serve excellent Rajasthani & multi-cuisine buffets
• Laal Maas, Ker Sangri, Gatte ki Sabzi — Marwari classics at all luxury resorts
• Sawai Madhopur Junction nearby is famous for its guava ice cream at the Brijwasi shop
• The town itself has limited dining — most travellers eat at their resort

How to Reach

By Air

Closest airport: Jaipur (JAI) — 180 km / 3.5 hr drive. Delhi (DEL) 380 km (6.5 hr) is also common.

By Rail

Closest station: Sawai Madhopur (SWM) — 11 km / 20 min drive. Direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Bangalore. The August Kranti Rajdhani is the popular Delhi train.

By Road

Jaipur 180 km (3.5 hr), Agra 240 km (5 hr), Delhi 380 km (6.5 hr). Often included in extended Golden Triangle (Delhi–Agra–Ranthambore–Jaipur). See our fleet.

Travel Tips

• 2 nights minimum — to fit at least 3 safaris (and improve sighting odds)
• Book safaris 90+ days ahead via the official Rajasthan Forest portal — they sell out fast
• Wear forest colours — khaki, olive, brown. NO bright colours.
• Layer up for early-morning safaris — cold at sunrise even in summer
• Carry binoculars and a long zoom lens (200mm+) for tigers
• If tigers don’t appear, do NOT pressure your guide — chasing is illegal and unethical
• Combine Ranthambore with Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary on the Delhi–Agra–Jaipur route
