About Ahmedabad — India’s First UNESCO City

Ahmedabad is India’s first UNESCO World Heritage City (inscribed 2017) — a 600-year-old layered mix of Hindu, Jain and Islamic architecture, woven through narrow “pols” (alleyways) that come alive after sunset. Founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmad Shah, the city is the cradle of Mahatma Gandhi’s freedom movement (the Sabarmati Ashram, the Salt March), the home of India’s most iconic textile industry, and the gateway to Gujarat. Add the magnificent Akshardham Temple, the tranquil Adalaj Stepwell, the lively Manek Chowk night food street, the kite-festival skies of Uttarayan, and the warmth of Gujarati hospitality — and Ahmedabad becomes one of India’s most rewarding heritage cities.

Best Time to Visit

• November – February — perfect (12–28 °C). Peak season.
• 14 January (Uttarayan / Kite Festival) — sky filled with kites; one of the best festivals in India
• September – October (Navratri) — Gujarat’s biggest festival, garba dancing every night

Top Attractions

Sabarmati Ashram (Gandhi Ashram)

The serene riverside ashram where Mahatma Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1930 and from where he launched the historic 1930 Dandi Salt March. Today: a powerful museum, Gandhi’s actual living quarters (Hridaya Kunj), the spinning wheel he used. Open daily, free entry. Don’t miss the daily evening prayer at sunset.

Akshardham Temple, Gandhinagar

23 km from Ahmedabad — magnificent modern Swaminarayan temple complex (built 1992). Pink sandstone construction with intricate carvings. Sound & light show in evening. Site of a tragic 2002 terror attack — the museum honours those killed.

Sidi Saiyyed Mosque (Sidi Saiyyed ni Jali)

The iconic 1573 mosque with 10 perfectly carved jali (lattice) windows — the world-famous “Tree of Life” jali is the symbol of Ahmedabad and the logo of IIM-A. Free entry.

Adalaj Stepwell (Vav)

18 km north — a 1499 Indo-Islamic stepwell built by Queen Rudabai. 5 storeys deep, 4 octagonal pillars at each level, intricate carvings of motifs and folk life. Architectural masterpiece.

Heritage Walking Tour of Old City (Pols)

Best done with a guided walking tour at sunrise (Heritage Walk by AMC, ₹100). 2-hour walk through the 600-year-old pols (gated alleyways) — including Manek Chowk, Calico Dome, Kavi Dalpatram Square, and 21 historic havelis.

Manek Chowk

The market square that becomes a nightly food street after 8 PM — pav bhaji, kulfi, dosa, sandwiches. The chaotic, joyful heart of Ahmedabad food culture. Stays open until 1 AM.

Jama Masjid (1424)

One of India’s most beautiful mosques — built in yellow sandstone with 260 columns supporting 15 domes. Stunning at sunrise.

Bhadra Fort & Teen Darwaza

The original 1411 fort and the magnificent triple gateway. Heart of old Ahmedabad.

Calico Museum of Textiles

One of the world’s most important textile museums — exquisite Indian textiles spanning 5 centuries. Open weekday mornings only, by 90-min guided tour. Photography prohibited.

Kankaria Lake

15th-century artificial lake in central Ahmedabad — recently revamped with a toy train, balloon rides, zoo, evening light show.

Vintage Car Museum (Kathwada)

Pranlal Bhogilal Collection — 100+ vintage cars including Rolls-Royces, Cadillacs, Bentleys.

Statue of Unity (90 km)

The world’s tallest statue at 182 m (twice the height of the Statue of Liberty) — Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Completed 2018. Adjacent jungle safari, valley of flowers, river-rafting on the Narmada.

By Air

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD) — Gujarat’s busiest. Direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, London, Dubai, Singapore.

By Rail

Ahmedabad Junction (ADI) — direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Pune, Hyderabad. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat is the popular fast option (5 hr).

By Road

Mumbai 530 km (10 hr by NH48), Udaipur 270 km (5 hr), Jaipur 670 km (10 hr), Vadodara 110 km (2 hr).
