About Bharatpur — The Bird Sanctuary

Bharatpur’s Keoladeo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage wetland and one of Asia’s finest bird-watching destinations. Over 370 bird species — including herons, egrets, kingfishers, painted storks, and the iconic Siberian crane (now sadly almost vanished) — visit each winter, joining thousands of resident birds. Originally created as a duck-hunting reserve for the Maharajas of Bharatpur, today it’s a sanctuary best explored slowly on a cycle-rickshaw at dawn. Add the impregnable Lohagarh Fort (“Iron Fort”) and an easy detour from the Golden Triangle, and Bharatpur becomes a magical 1-day stop.

Best Time to Visit

• October – March — peak bird-watching. Migratory birds arrive in winter.
• November – February — best for migratory species (8,000+ km of journey).
• August – October — best for breeding colonies of resident water birds (painted storks, ibises).
• April – June — too hot, sanctuary largely empty.

Top Attractions

Keoladeo National Park

The 29-sq-km wetland park (named after the Keoladeo Shiva temple inside). Best explored by hiring a cycle-rickshaw with a trained naturalist driver (most rickshaw-pullers are licensed birdwatchers). Walking and cycling are also encouraged. The 5-km central trail covers most of the lakes and bird zones in 3–4 hrs.

• Sariska gate is the main entry
• 370+ species — including over 50 raptors
• Migratory: bar-headed goose, common teal, Eurasian wigeon, demoiselle crane

Lohagarh Fort (“Iron Fort”)

Built in the 18th century by Raja Suraj Mal, Lohagarh is one of the strongest forts ever built in India — repeatedly attacked by the British and never conquered. The double moat, mud and stone walls, and Kishori Mahal palace inside are worth a 2-hour visit. Entry is free.

Ganga Mandir & Laxman Mandir

19th-century temples in the heart of the old city. Ganga Mandir’s mixed Mughal-Rajput architecture is unusual; Laxman Mandir features fine sandstone carvings.

Bharatpur Palace & Government Museum

The royal palace, now partly converted to a museum, displays sculptures, inscriptions, weapons, paintings and a charming collection of Jain art from the region.

Deeg Palace

32 km from Bharatpur — a hidden gem. The Deeg water palace (built 1772) features 500 fountains, exotic gardens and the unique Bhadon Pavilion that simulates a monsoon shower with thunder and lightning effects. One of the most extraordinary, least-visited palaces in Rajasthan.

How to Reach

By Air

Closest airports: Agra (AGR) 55 km / 1 hr — limited flights. Most travellers come from Delhi (DEL) 220 km / 4 hr or Jaipur (JAI) 180 km / 3 hr.

By Rail

Bharatpur Junction (BTE) is on the Delhi–Mumbai main line — direct trains from Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, Jaipur. The Shatabdi Express makes Delhi to Bharatpur a 2.5 hr ride.

By Road

Agra 55 km (1 hr), Delhi 220 km (4 hr), Jaipur 180 km (3 hr), Mathura 35 km (1 hr). Bharatpur is the perfect day stop on the Agra–Jaipur drive in the Golden Triangle. See our fleet.

Travel Tips

• 1 night is ideal — to fit a sunrise rickshaw tour and a sunset walk
• Hire a registered rickshaw-puller with naturalist license at the gate (₹250–400/hr)
• Bring binoculars (or rent at the gate) and a long zoom lens for photography
• Wear muted colours — khaki, green, brown
• Stay at The Bagh Resort, Laxmi Vilas Palace or the government’s Forest Lodge (only hotel inside the park)
• Combine with Fatehpur Sikri (just 40 km away) on the Agra–Jaipur drive
