Kurukshetra is the legendary battlefield of the Mahabharata — the land where, 5,000 years ago, Lord Krishna preached the Bhagavad Gita to a despondent Arjuna at the start of the great war. The exact spot — Jyotisar — is marked by an ancient banyan tree believed to have witnessed the discourse. Today the sacred Brahma Sarovar tank (one of India’s largest sacred reservoirs) is the spiritual heart of the city, with grand evening aartis and a dazzling Geeta Jayanti festival each winter that brings devotees from across India. Best Time to Visit

• October – March — perfect (12–25 °C)
• December (Geeta Jayanti) — the city’s biggest festival, marking the day Krishna spoke the Gita. Dance, music, lectures, fairs, lit ghats. The single best time to visit.
• Solar Eclipse — Kurukshetra has historically been the most sacred place in India to bathe during a solar eclipse (millions visit)
• April – June — extremely hot (42+ °C); avoid

Top Attractions

Brahma Sarovar

The largest man-made tank in Asia (3,600 m × 1,500 m). Sacred Hindu reservoir believed to have been created by Brahma himself. Bathing here on Solar Eclipse day is said to grant moksha. Evening aarti at the central Aaditya Mandir is unforgettable.

Jyotisar — The Birthplace of the Bhagavad Gita

The sacred banyan tree where Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna at the start of the Mahabharata war. The site has been a pilgrimage centre for 5,000 years. Daily evening Sound & Light show in Hindi/English narrates the entire Mahabharata epic with the river of Saraswati and the chariot of Krishna in dramatic illumination.

Sri Krishna Museum

Modern multimedia museum with artistic depictions of Krishna’s life — paintings, sculptures, scrolls, dioramas. The Mahabharata gallery and the Bhagavad Gita interpretation gallery are highlights.

Panorama & Science Museum

The 7-storey “Panorama and Science Centre” — the world’s largest panorama painting depicting the Mahabharata war. Walk through the immersive experience that recreates the battle.

Sheikh Chilli’s Tomb

The 17th-century Mughal-era tomb of the Sufi saint Sheikh Abdur Razaq (popularly known as Sheikh Chilli — for the legendary jests). Built by his disciple Prince Dara Shikoh. Beautiful red-sandstone Mughal architecture, an unusual mix in this Hindu pilgrim town.

Sthaneshwar Mahadev Temple

Ancient Shiva temple (one of the oldest in Haryana) — said to be where the Pandavas worshipped before the war. Crowded during Shivratri.

Bhadrakali Temple

One of the 51 Shakti Peethas — believed to be where Sati’s right ankle fell. Important pilgrim site.

Pehowa & Saraswati Tirth

30 km — sacred town on the banks of the Saraswati river (now subterranean). Pilgrim site for ancestor rituals (pind daan).

Battlefield Markers

Various markers around Kurukshetra mark the supposed locations of key Mahabharata events — Bhishma Pitamah’s bed of arrows (Bishan Cantt), the Karna Vadh site, etc.

How to Reach

By Air

Closest airport: Chandigarh (IXC) — 90 km / 2 hr drive. Delhi (DEL) 170 km / 3.5 hr is also common.

By Rail

Kurukshetra Junction (KKDE) — well-connected. Direct trains from Delhi (Shatabdi 2 hr), Mumbai, Amritsar.

By Road

Delhi 170 km (3.5 hr by NH44), Chandigarh 90 km (2 hr), Amritsar 280 km (5 hr). Best as a day trip from Delhi or stop on the Delhi-Amritsar route.

Travel Tips

• 1 day is enough — usually a half-day stop on the Delhi-Chandigarh-Amritsar route
• Stay at the Saraswati or Madhuban hotels — limited but adequate options
• Visit during Geeta Jayanti (December) for the most vibrant experience
• Sunrise/sunset are the most spiritual times at Brahma Sarovar
• Carry modest clothing — religious site
