Best Time to Visit

• March – June — pleasant (10–25 °C). Most popular season.
• December – February — snowfall. Snow at higher points (Kufri, Narkanda). Christmas in Shimla is magical.
• July – September — monsoon. Beautiful but rainy and slippery.
• October – November — clearest skies, post-monsoon greenery.

Top Attractions

The Mall Road & Ridge

Shimla’s open-air heart. The Ridge is a wide pedestrian boulevard with views of the snow-capped peaks; the Mall Road descends from it with shops, cafés, the Scandal Point meeting point and the iconic Gaiety Theatre (1887). No vehicles allowed — pure walking joy.

Kalka-Shimla Toy Train (UNESCO)

One of the most beautiful train rides in the world. The 96-km narrow-gauge line was completed in 1903 and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. 5 hours, 102 tunnels, 800+ bridges, 919 curves. Multiple daily services — the Shivalik Deluxe Express (a/c) and Himalayan Queen (vintage charm) are the popular options. Book 90+ days ahead for top season.

Christ Church (1857)

The second-oldest church in north India — the iconic neo-Gothic stone structure on the Ridge with stained-glass windows designed by Lockwood Kipling (Rudyard Kipling’s father). The 5-bell carillon still rings.

Viceregal Lodge / Indian Institute of Advanced Study

Built 1888 — the magnificent Jacobean-style residence of the British Viceroys (Lord Dufferin built it). The Indo-Pak Partition Plan and the Cabinet Mission decisions were taken here. Now an academic institute with public tours.

Jakhoo Temple & Hanuman Statue

The highest point in Shimla (2,455 m), reached by a 30-min hike or a ropeway from the Ridge. The 108-ft Hanuman statue is one of the tallest in the world. Beware of monkeys — they grab glasses, phones, food. Use a stick (sold at base).

Kufri

16 km from Shimla, at 2,720 m. Famous for snow activities in winter (skiing, sledging) and the Himalayan Nature Park (snow leopard, Himalayan tahr, monal pheasant). The pony ride to Mahasu Peak is touristy but iconic.

Naldehra & Mashobra

Quieter retreats with India’s oldest 9-hole golf course (Naldehra, 1905) and the gorgeous Wildflower Hall hotel at Mashobra (the former Lord Kitchener’s residence).

Tara Devi Temple, Sankat Mochan, State Museum

Other notable spots — old hilltop temples and a small museum with Pahari miniatures and bronze sculptures.

How to Reach

By Air

Closest airport: Shimla (SLV) — 22 km, very limited flights. Most travellers fly to Chandigarh (IXC) 110 km / 4 hr away.

By Rail

The Kalka-Shimla Toy Train is the iconic way — 5 hr ride from Kalka. Kalka (KLK) connects to Delhi (Howrah Mail, Kalka Shatabdi).

By Road

Delhi 370 km (8 hr). Chandigarh 110 km (3.5 hr). Manali 250 km (8 hr). Overnight Volvo from Delhi (HRTC, Himsuta) is popular. Book private cabs.

Travel Tips

• 2 days is enough — add 1 more day for Kufri/Mashobra/Narkanda
• Stay near Mall Road / Ridge (Cecil, Clarkes, Wildflower Hall) for convenience
• Toy train tickets sell out — book 90 days ahead via IRCTC
• The Mall is vehicle-free — taxis drop you at the lower car park; walking up the steep streets is part of the experience
• Carry warm clothes year-round (cold evenings even in summer)
• Snow gear in winter — buy in Kufri or rent at the base of slopes
• Combine with Manali for a 7-day Himachal circuit
• Avoid driving on weekends — heavy traffic from Chandigarh/Delhi
