Rajasthan is India’s largest state and the absolute heart of its royal heritage. From the hippie vibes of Pushkar to the stunning landscapes of Jodhpur, the charisma of Udaipur to the savouries of Jaipur, and the eye-catching sandstone palaces to the Thar Desert in Jaisalmer — every city has its own story, its own colour, and its own architecture.

Rajasthan is famously a colour-coded state: Jaipur is pink, Jodhpur is blue, Udaipur is white, Jaisalmer is golden and Jhalawar is purple. Set on the oldest mountain range in India — the Aravallis — Rajasthan covers 39,313 sq km and is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Keoladeo National Park, Jantar Mantar of Jaipur, and the Hill Forts of Rajasthan (Chittor, Kumbhalgarh, Ranthambore, Gagron, Amer, Jaisalmer). Kumbhalgarh Fort even has the world’s second-longest continuous wall after the Great Wall of China.

Best Time to Visit

• November – February — the ideal time. Days are pleasant (10–25 °C), nights are cool, and the major festivals (Pushkar Camel Fair, Jaipur Lit Fest, Desert Festival) all happen. Peak tourist season.
• March – June — extreme heat, often crossing 45 °C. Sightseeing is best limited to early mornings and evenings; visit Mount Abu (the only hill station) for relief.
• July – September — monsoon brings unexpected greenery to Udaipur and the lakes. A quieter, cheaper time to travel with dramatic post-rain skies for photography.

Jaipur — The Pink City

The capital and the perfect starting point. Painted pink in 1876 to welcome the Prince of Wales, Jaipur is a UNESCO-listed walled city of bazaars, palaces and the world’s most precise pre-telescope observatory.

Udaipur — The City of Lakes

Often called the Venice of the East, Udaipur sits around a series of artificial lakes that mirror its white-marble Marwar palaces. Romantic, royal and visually unforgettable.

Jodhpur — The Blue City

The labyrinth of indigo lanes beneath the towering walls of Mehrangarh Fort — one of India’s most photographed views. Founded by Rao Jodha in the 15th century, Jodhpur is the gateway to the Thar.

Jaisalmer — The Golden City

Rising from the Thar like a sand-castle dream, Jaisalmer’s golden walls catch the light at dawn and dusk like nowhere else. The fort is one of the world’s very few inhabited forts.

Pushkar — The Sacred Town

One of India’s holiest cities — built around a lake said to have been formed by Lord Brahma. Famous for the rare Brahma Temple (one of very few in the world) and the wildly colourful November Camel Fair.

Bikaner — The Camel Country

The desert town that gave India its iconic bhujia — and a fort that feels straight out of an Indiana Jones film. Bikaner is the gateway to the Thar’s quieter side.

Ranthambore National Park

One of the best places in India to spot the Royal Bengal Tiger in the wild. The reserve also wraps around a 1,000-year-old fort — making for some of the most cinematic wildlife photography on the planet.

Mount Abu — The Hill Station

Traditional Rajasthani Cuisine

• Dal Baati Churma — the king of Rajasthani vegetarian food. Spiced lentils, baked wheat balls and sweet ghee-soaked crumble.
• Laal Maans — the iconic Rajput red mutton curry, fiery with Mathania chillies. Try it at Handi in Jaipur.
• Gatte ki Sabzi — gram-flour dumplings in tangy yoghurt curry.
• Pyaaz Kachori — flaky onion-stuffed pastry, best for breakfast.
• Ker Sangri — desert beans and berries, a true Rajasthan-only dish.
• Ghewar — honeycomb-textured sweet, especially during Teej.
• Boondi Laddoo & Mawa Kachori — Jodhpur sweet specialities.

By Air

The main hub is Jaipur International Airport (JAI) with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Gulf destinations (Dubai, Sharjah, Muscat) plus Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Other airports: Udaipur (UDR), Jodhpur (JDH), Jaisalmer (JSA), Bikaner (BKB), Kota (KTU).

By Rail

Excellent rail network across the state — major junctions at Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Ajmer and Jaisalmer. The luxury Palace on Wheels and Maharajas’ Express trains offer a once-in-a-lifetime royal rail experience.

By Road
