About North Goa

A taste of North Goa

About North Goa — Beach Party Capital

North Goa is sun, sand and party — Baga’s beach shacks, Anjuna’s flea market, Chapora’s sunsets and Calangute’s water sports are the soundtrack of every backpacker’s first Goa trip. The 30-km coastline from Sinquerim to Morjim is dotted with golden beaches, Portuguese churches, hippie cafés and beach clubs that party until dawn. North Goa is louder, livelier and cheaper than the south — ideal for first-timers, friend groups, and the under-30 crowd.

Best Time to Visit

  • November – February — perfect (22–30 °C). Peak tourist season.
  • December – early January — peak Christmas/New Year. Book 4+ months ahead.
  • March – May — hot & humid (32 °C+) but pool weather; cheaper rates
  • June – September — heavy monsoon. Many shacks closed; some hotels only operate.

Top Beaches

Baga Beach

The most popular party beach. Famous for water sports (parasailing, jet ski, banana boat), long beach shacks (Britto’s, Cafe Mambo), and the Tito’s Lane nightlife strip. Crowded — and that’s the point.

Calangute

“Queen of Beaches” — long sandy stretch with extensive water sports. More family-oriented than Baga.

Anjuna Beach & Wednesday Flea Market

Rocky-cliff-fringed beach. Famous for the Wednesday Flea Market — bohemian shopping for clothes, jewellery, instruments. The trance party scene around Curlies and Shiva Valley is legendary.

Vagator & Chapora

Quieter than Baga/Anjuna. Chapora Fort sunset (made famous by the Bollywood film Dil Chahta Hai) is iconic. Big Vagator and Little Vagator (Ozran) beaches are popular with the cool crowd.

Morjim & Ashvem

Quiet northern beaches — favoured by Russians (sometimes called “Mini Russia”) and yoga retreats. Olive Ridley turtle nesting site.

Arambol

The hippie capital — drum circles at sunset, yoga schools, Israeli cafés, freshwater lake adjacent to the beach. Cheaper than the south parts.

Sinquerim & Candolim

Quieter than Baga but still has water sports. Home to Fort Aguada (1612) and luxury resorts (Taj Holiday Village, Marriott).

Mandrem & Querim (Keri)

Far north, quieter — the long beach where the Tiracol River meets the sea. Boutique resorts.

Other Attractions

Fort Aguada

Magnificent 1612 Portuguese fort overlooking Sinquerim. The lighthouse (1864) is one of the oldest in Asia. Sunset views of the Arabian Sea.

Old Goa (UNESCO)

10 km inland — the Portuguese capital from 1510 to 1759. Now a UNESCO site with the magnificent Basilica of Bom Jesus (housing the body of St Francis Xavier) and the Sé Cathedral (largest church in Asia).

Panaji (Panjim)

Goa’s lovely capital — Latin Quarter Fontainhas with brightly-painted Portuguese houses, narrow lanes, the Mandovi River. Don’t miss the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church.

Casinos on the Mandovi

Several offshore casino boats — Deltin Royale, Big Daddy, Casino Pride. Live blackjack, roulette, slot machines. From 6 PM.

Saturday Night Bazaar — Arpora

Massive Saturday-night market with international live music, food stalls, hippy clothing, antiques. Far better than the Wednesday Anjuna Market — runs Oct–April.

How to Reach

By Air

Two airports: Manohar International Airport (GOX, Mopa) in the north (opened 2022) and the older Dabolim (GOI) in the south. North Goa beaches are 30–60 min from Mopa, 60–90 min from Dabolim.

By Rail

Thivim (THVM) for north Goa, Madgaon (MAO) for south. Konkan Railway from Mumbai is one of India’s most beautiful rail journeys.

By Road

Mumbai 600 km (10 hr by NH66), Bangalore 590 km (10 hr), Pune 450 km (7 hr).

Travel Tips

  • 4–5 days for North Goa, 7+ days if combining north + south
  • Stay near Baga / Calangute for parties; Vagator / Anjuna for cool crowd; Mandrem / Ashvem / Morjim for quiet luxury
  • Rent a scooter or motorbike (₹400–600/day) — best way to get around Goa
  • Book hotels 4+ months ahead for Christmas/New Year
  • Many shacks close 15 May – 15 October (monsoon)
  • Carry plenty of sunscreen — UV is strong
  • Try the casino boats (smart casual dress required)
  • Saturday Night Bazaar (Arpora) > Wednesday Flea Market (Anjuna)
  • Drive carefully — Goan roads are narrow and many tourists drink-drive
