About Warangal — Kakatiya Heritage

Warangal was the medieval capital of the Kakatiya dynasty (1163–1323) — and home to one of India’s newest UNESCO World Heritage sites, the magnificent Ramappa Temple (inscribed in 2021). The 12th–13th century Kakatiya kings — particularly Rudramadevi, one of the few woman rulers in Indian history — built temples and forts of extraordinary stone-craft. Add the imposing Warangal Fort, the iconic Thousand Pillar Temple, and the easy day trip from Hyderabad — and Warangal becomes one of the most under-visited cultural treasures of South India.

Best Time to Visit

• October – March — pleasant (15–28 °C). Best season.
• April – June — extremely hot (40+ °C). Avoid.
• July – September — moderate monsoon, lush greenery.

Ramappa Temple (UNESCO 2021)

70 km from Warangal city — a stunning 13th-century Shiva temple built by Recharla Rudra (general of King Ganapati Deva) in 1213. Famous for:

• Floating bricks — the towering shikhara (vimana) is built with bricks so light they float on water (proven during restoration)
• Black-basalt sculptures on the outer walls — among the finest in India
• Madanika (dancer) figures — voluptuous female figures performing classical Indian dance poses, with elaborate jewellery
• Survived a major 17th-century earthquake intact
• Named after the sculptor Ramappa (rare in India — temples are usually named after deities)

Thousand Pillar Temple (Rudreshwara Temple)

Built in 1163 by Rudra Deva — the iconic Kakatiya star-shaped (3-pointed) Trikutalayam temple dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Surya. The intricately-carved monolithic Nandi (in the temple courtyard) is one of the largest single-stone Nandi statues in India. Heavy ASI restoration in recent years.

Warangal Fort & Kakatiya Kala Thoranam

The capital fortress — concentric walls (3 rings: stone, mud, river). Largely ruined now, but the four magnificent Kakatiya Kala Thorana ornamental gateways still stand — the symbol of Telangana state (these gateways feature on the state emblem).

Bhadrakali Temple

One of the oldest temples of Goddess Kali in India — overlooking the Bhadrakali Lake. The 8-armed Goddess idol is unusually tall (2.7 m).

Kakatiya Rock Garden

Modern landscaped garden with sculptures and artificial waterfalls — local family hangout.

Pakhal Lake & Wildlife Sanctuary

50 km from Warangal — 1213 AD-built artificial lake (one of India’s oldest engineered reservoirs) and a wildlife sanctuary.

Laknavaram Lake & Suspension Bridges

80 km — picturesque lake with three connected hanging bridges. Underrated photography spot.

By Air

Closest airport: Hyderabad (HYD) — 150 km / 3 hr drive. No direct flights to Warangal.

By Rail

Warangal Junction (WL) — direct trains from Hyderabad (3 hr by Telangana Express), Vijayawada, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai.

By Road

Hyderabad 150 km (3 hr by NH163), Vijayawada 220 km (4 hr). Most travellers come from Hyderabad as a day or overnight trip. See our fleet.

• 1–2 days — 1 day for the city sites, 1 for Ramappa + Pakhal Lake
• Stay at Hotel Suprabha or Ratna Hotel — limited but comfortable options
• Or visit as a day trip from Hyderabad (early start required for Ramappa)
• Hire a local guide at Warangal Fort + Thousand Pillar — Kakatiya history is rich and rewarding
• Carry water and a hat — temple walks have minimal shade
• Combine with Hyderabad + Bhadrachalam (Lord Ram temple) for a 4-day Telangana circuit
