About Rann of Kutch — The White Desert

Stretching to the horizon in pure white salt, the Rann of Kutch is one of the most surreal landscapes on the planet — a 7,500 sq km salt marsh that becomes a flat white desert from November to February each year. Best experienced on a full-moon night during the Rann Utsav, when the desert turns silver and you can walk under a sky thick with stars. The region is also home to extraordinary tribal villages (Hodka, Dhordo, Banni) where artisans practice 300-year-old crafts — applique, mirror-work, leather, embroidery — that you’ll buy directly from the makers. Best Time to Visit

• November – February — perfect (12–25 °C). The white desert is completely white and dry — the iconic Rann.
• Rann Utsav (Nov 1 – Feb 28) — 4 months of the famous “Tent City” experience at Dhordo. Best on full-moon nights.
• March – June — extremely hot (40+ °C); not advisable
• July – October — monsoon, the Rann floods (becomes a marsh) and tents are dismantled

Top Attractions

The White Desert (Rann)

The defining experience. From Dhordo village, a 5-minute camel cart or jeep ride takes you to the salt-flat horizon. Sunset, full moon, sunrise — three different magical experiences. Pristine white expanse, no horizon, sky-mirror reflections.

Rann Utsav (Tent City, Dhordo)

The 4-month luxury tent festival from November to February — government-run with 3 categories of tents (Premium AC, Deluxe, Economy). Folk dance evenings, camel safaris, ATV rides, paragliding, full-moon walks. ~5,000 tents during peak. Book 4–6 months ahead.

Kala Dungar (Black Hill)

The highest point in Kutch (462 m) — sunrise here over the Rann is unforgettable. The 400-year-old Dattatreya Temple on top has the unusual practice where the priest’s call brings jackals to feed from his hand at dusk. Also the magnetic-illusion road nearby.

Dholavira (UNESCO 2021)

200 km from Bhuj — one of the largest cities of the Indus Valley Civilization (3500–1500 BCE). The world’s earliest known signboard (8 letters carved in gypsum) was found here. Reservoirs, fortified walls, the unique 3-tier urban plan. Inscribed as UNESCO in 2021.

Bhuj — The Capital of Kutch

• Aina Mahal (1750) — the “Palace of Mirrors” — heavily damaged in 2001 earthquake, partially restored
• Prag Mahal (1879) — Italian-Gothic palace, the bell tower offers stunning Bhuj views

60 km from Bhuj — the cleanest beach in Gujarat with the magnificent 1929 Vijay Vilas Palace (rented for the Bollywood film Lagaan). Pristine sand, calm waters.

Mata no Madh (Ashapura Mata Temple)

One of the most important temples in Kutch — dedicated to the local Goddess Ashapura. Pilgrim site.

Dhordo Village & Tent City

The base of Rann Utsav — folk dancers, camel rides, the world-class tent city. The “White Rann” viewing point is just outside.

Kalo Dungar Magnetic Illusion Road

Cars in neutral appear to roll uphill — an optical illusion that’s gone viral.

Lakhpat — Ghost Fort City

Once a thriving port (1780s), abandoned after the 1819 Kutch earthquake when the Indus river changed course. Now a haunting ghost town with massive walls and the Gurudwara Pehli Patshahi (Guru Nanak visited).

Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, Little Rann

4,950 sq km sanctuary in the Little Rann — home to the endangered Indian Wild Ass (Khur) and 200+ migratory bird species. Different from the White Rann (Greater Rann).

Closest airports: Bhuj (BHJ) — limited flights from Mumbai. Most travellers fly to Ahmedabad (AMD) 400 km away and drive.

By Rail

Bhuj (BHUJ) — direct trains from Mumbai (Kutch Express, 17 hr), Ahmedabad, Pune. Tent City is 80 km / 1.5 hr drive from Bhuj.

By Road

Ahmedabad 400 km (7 hr by NH27), Mumbai 850 km (16 hr — best to fly). From Bhuj: Dhordo (Tent City) 80 km, Mandvi 60 km, Dholavira 200 km.
