About Manali — Valley of Adventures

Manali is the Himalayan town that has it all — snow, rivers, pine forests, hot springs, ancient temples, and a buzzing café scene in Old Manali. From paragliding at Solang Valley to snow play at Rohtang Pass to apple-orchard homestays in Naggar, Manali is the adventure capital of the north — and the gateway to Lahaul, Spiti and Leh-Ladakh. Sitting at 2,050 m in the Beas River valley, it’s a 2-hour drive from Kullu and just over a day from Delhi by overnight Volvo.

Best Time to Visit

• March – June — pleasant (15–25 °C). Best for sightseeing and adventure.
• December – February — heavy snow. Skiing, snow trekking, igloo stays. Rohtang and Atal Tunnel may close in heavy snowfall.
• July – September — monsoon. Risk of landslides on the ghat road.
• September – November — clear post-monsoon. Apples ripening — homestay season.

Top Attractions

Solang Valley

14 km from town. Manali’s adventure hub — paragliding (₹1,500–3,000), zorbing, ATV rides, snow skiing in winter, ropeway to Mt Phalut. The 2-km cable car ride is breathtaking.

Rohtang Pass / Atal Tunnel

Rohtang Pass (3,978 m, 51 km) is the famous gateway to Lahaul-Spiti — open May–Oct. Permits required (online). Snow on the pass even in summer. The Atal Tunnel (opened 2020, 9 km long) now lets you reach Lahaul in 30 minutes (was 4–5 hours over Rohtang).

Hadimba Devi Temple

1553-year-old wooden temple dedicated to Hadimba (wife of Bhima from the Mahabharata). The 4-tier pagoda-style roof is unique in Indian temple architecture. Surrounded by ancient deodar trees.

Old Manali

The bohemian café-and-backpacker quarter across the Manalsu river. Dylan’s Toasted & Roasted Coffee, Cafe 1947 (with live music), Drifters Café, Lazy Dog — the soundtrack to every backpacker’s first Manali. Stays open into the night.

Vashisht Hot Springs & Temple

3 km from town. Natural sulphur hot springs (free to use, separate male/female) inside a 4,000-year-old temple complex dedicated to sage Vashishtha. Stunningly atmospheric.

Naggar Castle & Roerich Art Gallery

22 km from Manali. A 1460 wood-and-stone castle (now an HPTDC heritage hotel), and the wonderful Roerich Art Gallery — home of the Russian painter and theosophist Nicholas Roerich, who lived here from 1929–1947.

Manu Temple, Tibetan Monastery, Mall Road

Around the town — the ancient Manu Temple (the only one of its kind in India), a small but lovely Tibetan Monastery, and the Mall Road for evening strolls and Himachali shopping.

Beas Kund Trek & Hampta Pass Trek

Manali is the base for some of India’s most popular Himalayan treks — Beas Kund (3 days), Hampta Pass (5 days), Bhrigu Lake (3 days), Pin Parvati (10 days).

How to Reach

By Air

Closest airport: Kullu-Bhuntar (KUU) — 50 km / 1.5 hr drive. Limited flights from Delhi. Most travellers come by overnight bus or by air to Chandigarh (IXC) 310 km away.

By Rail

Closest station: Joginder Nagar (JDNX) 165 km, or Chandigarh (CDG) 310 km. Most use overnight Volvo from Delhi.

By Road

Delhi 540 km (12–14 hr by Volvo overnight). Chandigarh 310 km (8 hr). Shimla 250 km (8 hr). The popular HRTC and Himsuta Volvo overnight buses (₹1,200–2,000) are the standard option. Book private cabs.

Travel Tips

• 3–4 days minimum — to fit Solang, Rohtang/Atal Tunnel, Naggar and a day in Old Manali
• Book Rohtang permits in advance via the official HP government portal — capped at 1,200/day
• Stay in Old Manali for vibe; Manu Allaya / Snow Valley for luxury; Hadimba area for quiet
• Carry warm clothes year-round (cold in evenings even in summer)
• Atal Tunnel is open year-round — much easier route to Lahaul than Rohtang
• Avoid driving the ghat-roads in monsoon (landslides)
• Try helicopter ride from Solang for aerial Beas valley views
• Best paired with Shimla for a 7-day Himachal circuit, or Spiti / Leh-Ladakh for adventure
