About Dharamshala

A taste of Dharamshala

About Dharamshala — Home of the Dalai Lama

Dharamshala is the spiritual heart of Tibetan India — home to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the Tibetan government-in-exile, the Tsuglagkhang Complex (the Dalai Lama’s residence and main temple), and a vibrant Tibetan exile community. Above town, McLeod Ganj (“Little Lhasa”) offers monasteries, Tibetan cuisine, the Tibet Museum, and the gateway to the gentle Triund trek with views of the Dhauladhar range. Add the Norbulingka Institute, Bhagsu Falls, the Kangra Valley with its 1,500 ft Kangra Fort — and Dharamshala becomes one of India’s most distinctive and meaningful destinations.

Best Time to Visit

  • March – June — pleasant (15–25 °C). Best for trekking and sightseeing.
  • September – November — clear skies, post-monsoon green, ideal for Triund and photography.
  • December – February — heavy snow at McLeod Ganj. Magical for snow lovers; some treks closed.
  • July – August — heavy monsoon, leeches on trails. Avoid trekking.

Top Attractions

Tsuglagkhang Complex (Dalai Lama Temple)

The official residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the main Tibetan Buddhist temple in exile. Visitors can attend morning prayers, watch monk debates in the courtyard, and view the Tibet Museum. Public audiences with the Dalai Lama are rare and pre-registration is required (often months ahead via dalailama.com).

McLeod Ganj

“Little Lhasa” — the Tibetan-flavoured upper town with prayer flags fluttering between deodar trees. Walk the kora (devotee path) around the Tsuglagkhang, visit the Namgyal Monastery, browse Tibetan thangka shops, and enjoy momos and thukpa in family-run restaurants.

Bhagsu Falls & Bhagsunag Temple

2 km from McLeod Ganj — a small 30-ft waterfall with a Lord Shiva temple, surrounded by a beautiful walking trail. Best at sunset.

Triund Trek

The most popular trek in the area — 9 km / 4–5 hours one way from McLeod Ganj to Triund (2,875 m), with stunning views of the Dhauladhar range. Overnight tent stay at the top is unforgettable. Day trek possible if you start early.

Norbulingka Institute

10 km from McLeod Ganj — the world’s largest centre for the preservation of Tibetan art and culture. Watch master craftsmen at work — thangka painting, applique, woodcarving, tailoring. Beautiful Japanese-style gardens, lovely café and museum.

Kangra Fort & Masroor Rock-Cut Temple

Kangra Fort (8th century) — one of India’s oldest hill forts, with breathtaking views from the ramparts. Continue 30 km to Masroor for a remarkable 8th-century rock-cut Indo-Aryan temple complex (often called the “Ellora of Himachal”).

HPCA Cricket Stadium

The world’s most picturesque cricket stadium — backed by the snow-clad Dhauladhar range. Catches Ranji and IPL games (Punjab Kings). Even when no match is on, stadium tour is worth it.

Bir-Billing

70 km away — the paragliding capital of India and 2nd-largest paragliding site in the world. The 2015 World Paragliding Cup was held here. 14-min tandem flight from Billing (2,400 m) to Bir.

Dal Lake (Tota Rani)

Small picturesque lake 11 km from McLeod Ganj. Sacred lake with a Shiva temple — surrounded by fir trees.
