Best Time to Visit

• November – March — perfect (10–25 °C). Peak season.

• October–November (Diwali / Bandi Chhor Divas) — Golden Temple lit by 100,000 oil lamps. Spectacular.

Top Attractions

Golden Temple (Sri Harmandir Sahib)

Built in the 1580s by Guru Arjan Dev (5th Sikh Guru). Coated in gold by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1830. The temple sits in the centre of Amrit Sarovar (the Pool of Nectar) — connected to the marble parikrama by a single bridge.

• No leather, no shoes — leave at the cloakroom (free)
• Don’t miss the early morning (4–5 AM) Palki Sahib procession — the holy Guru Granth Sahib book is carried from the Akal Takht to the Harmandir Sahib

• Akal Takht — the seat of temporal Sikh authority, opposite the temple
• Central Sikh Museum inside the complex

Langar — World’s Largest Free Kitchen

The Golden Temple serves ~100,000 free vegetarian meals every day — to anyone, irrespective of religion, caste, gender. Sit cross-legged on the floor, served by volunteers (sevadars). Roti, dal, vegetable, kheer. Volunteer to help — washing dishes, rolling rotis — one of the most moving experiences of your India trip.

Jallianwala Bagh

2-min walk from the Golden Temple. The garden where on April 13, 1919, General Reginald Dyer ordered British troops to fire on a peaceful unarmed crowd — killing 379 (officially) to 1,000+ (estimated). The bullet-marked walls and the well into which people jumped are preserved. Powerful, sobering, essential.

Wagah Border Ceremony

30 km from Amritsar — the daily flag-lowering ceremony at the India-Pakistan border. High-energy patriotic spectacle of high-stepping soldiers, blasting bugles, and 5,000+ spectators on each side waving flags and chanting. Daily 4:15 PM in winter, 5:15 PM in summer. Reach 2 hours early.

Partition Museum

Inside the Town Hall — the world’s only museum dedicated to the 1947 Partition. Heart-wrenching photos, oral histories, refugee artifacts. Allow 2 hours.

Durgiana Temple

The “Hindu Golden Temple” — modelled on the Golden Temple but dedicated to Goddess Durga. Beautiful at sunset.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum

The Sikh empire’s last great ruler — Ranjit Singh (1801–1839). Museum displays his weapons, royal artifacts, paintings.

Gobindgarh Fort

Restored 1760 fort in central Amritsar — now a heritage tourism complex with museums, sound & light show, restaurants. Worth the 2-hour visit.

Akal Takht

One of 5 takhts (seats of authority) in Sikhism. Built 1606. Adjacent to the Golden Temple. Open for darshan.

By Air

Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (ATQ) — 11 km from city. Direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore + Birmingham, Dubai, Singapore.

By Rail

Amritsar Junction (ASR) — direct trains from Delhi (Shatabdi Express, 6 hr), Mumbai, Kolkata. The Amritsar Shatabdi from Delhi is the most popular.

By Road

Delhi 450 km (8 hr by NH44), Chandigarh 230 km (5 hr), Dharamshala 200 km (4.5 hr), Wagah Border 30 km (1 hr).

Travel Tips

• 1.5–2 days is enough — Day 1: Golden Temple + Jallianwala Bagh + Partition Museum. Day 2: Wagah ceremony + city walk.
• Stay near Golden Temple for atmosphere — Hotel Hong Kong Inn, Hotel Indus, Ramada
• Best time to visit Golden Temple: 4–6 AM (Palki Sahib procession) or after 9 PM (peaceful)
• Wear comfortable footwear — much walking, plus walking barefoot inside the temple complex
• Cover head — bandana available free at temple entrance
• Wagah Border: reach 2 hours early; carry only your phone (no large bags); no umbrellas
• Combine with Dharamshala + Mcleodganj (200 km) for a Punjab-Himachal trip
• Buy phulkari (Punjabi embroidery) and jutti (slippers) at Hall Bazaar
• Avoid weekends — temple is much busier
