A taste of Chandigarh
About Chandigarh — The Planned City
Designed by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier in the 1950s, Chandigarh is India’s first planned modern city — a clean grid of wide tree-lined avenues, gardens, and concrete monuments. The Capitol Complex (the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Secretariat and the Legislative Assembly) earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2016 as one of the great works of 20th-century architecture. Don’t miss the surreal Rock Garden, made entirely of recycled industrial waste by a quiet road inspector named Nek Chand. Combined with Sukhna Lake’s pleasant evening promenade and India’s prettiest Rose Garden, Chandigarh is a perfect 1-day stop on any Punjab-Himachal trip.
Best Time to Visit

Top Attractions
Capitol Complex (UNESCO 2016)
Le Corbusier’s masterpiece — three monumental concrete buildings:
- Punjab & Haryana High Court — the most photographed of the three. The columned facade with the famous green and yellow accents.
- Secretariat — the world’s longest concrete office building (254 m).
- Legislative Assembly — the iconic curved roof.
- Open Hand Monument — Le Corbusier’s emblem of Chandigarh (“open to give and to receive”)
- Tower of Shadows — calculations of sun angles cast complex patterns
- Free guided tours daily — passport ID required at entry
Rock Garden of Chandigarh
One of India’s most surreal attractions. Nek Chand, a road-department inspector, secretly built this 25-acre sculpture garden over 18 years in a forbidden government area — entirely from recycled industrial waste: broken bangles, ceramic tiles, electric switches, bicycle wheels. When discovered in 1975, instead of being demolished, the city turned it into a public park. Today: 5,000+ sculptures, waterfalls, and dreamlike pathways.
Sukhna Lake
3-sq-km artificial lake at the foot of the Shivalik hills. Pedal-boating, jogging, evening promenade. Sunrise here is one of the prettiest in north India.
Zakir Hussain Rose Garden
Asia’s largest rose garden — 30 acres, 1,600 varieties. The annual Rose Festival in late February is spectacular.
Pinjore Gardens (Yadavindra Gardens)
22 km away — 17th-century Mughal terrace gardens commissioned by Aurangzeb’s brother Fidai Khan. 7 terraces, fountains, palaces. Beautiful in evening.
Government Museum & Art Gallery
Houses the famous Gandhara Buddhist sculptures (1st–4th century), Pahari miniatures, and modern Indian art. Adjacent are the Natural History Museum and Le Corbusier Centre.
Sector 17 (City Centre)
The famous open-air concrete plaza designed by Le Corbusier — fountains, retail, cafés. Pedestrian-only. Historic shopping centre.
Elante Mall
One of north India’s largest malls — for those craving modern retail.
Punjab University Campus
Le Corbusier-designed campus — the iconic Gandhi Bhawan and Student Centre are architectural icons.
