A taste of Chennai
About Chennai — Gateway to South India
Chennai (formerly Madras) blends ancient Dravidian temples with British forts, beach promenades and a thumping film industry. Home to the 2nd-largest urban beach in the world (Marina), the historic Fort St George (where the British East India Company started in 1644), the gorgeous Kapaleeshwarar Temple, and the Carnatic music capital — Chennai is the cultural heart of South India. Add the easy day trip to Mahabalipuram (UNESCO rock-cut shore temples), and Chennai becomes the perfect base to explore Tamil Nadu.

Top Attractions
Marina Beach
13-km stretch of golden sand — the 2nd-longest urban beach in the world. Sunrise here is when Chennai wakes up — joggers, fishermen, kite-flyers. The walk from Lighthouse to Anna Square (passing Vivekananda House) is iconic.
Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Mylapore
Chennai’s most famous Hindu temple — 7th-century Dravidian-style with a magnificent 37-m gopuram covered in 1,000 colourful stucco figures. The annual Arupathimoovar festival in March/April is spectacular.
Fort St George & St Mary’s Church
Built in 1644 — the first English fortress in India and the seedbed of British rule. Inside is St Mary’s Church (1680) — the oldest Anglican church in Asia. Robert Clive was married here.
San Thome Cathedral
Believed to have been built over the tomb of St Thomas the Apostle (martyred at nearby Mylapore in 72 AD). One of only 3 churches in the world built over an apostle’s tomb (others: St Peter’s Rome, Santiago de Compostela).
Government Museum & Bronze Gallery
Asia’s oldest museum (1851) — extensive collection of Pallava and Chola bronzes (some of the world’s finest), Amaravati marbles, geological collection.
Mahabalipuram (day trip — UNESCO)
55 km south — UNESCO-listed 7th-century Pallava rock-cut temples. Highlights: Shore Temple (one of South India’s oldest), Pancha Rathas (5 monolithic chariot temples), Arjuna’s Penance (the world’s largest open-air bas-relief), and the dazzling Krishna’s Butter Ball balanced on a hillside. Don’t miss the dance festival in January.
Kanchipuram (day trip)
72 km — the “city of 1,000 temples” and one of the seven sacred Hindu pilgrimage cities. Famous for Kanjeevaram silk sarees too. Major temples: Kailasanathar (8th century), Ekambareswarar, Varadaraja Perumal, Kanchi Kamakshi.
