About Ooty — Queen of Hill Stations

Ooty (Udhagamandalam) sits at 2,240 m in the Nilgiri (Blue) Hills — its eucalyptus-scented air, rolling tea estates, dense pine forests and the UNESCO-listed Toy Train make it the most loved hill station of the South. Founded by the British in the early 1800s as a summer retreat, Ooty retains its colonial architecture, the picturesque Botanical Gardens, the artificial Ooty Lake and the iconic Doddabetta Peak (Tamil Nadu’s highest at 2,637 m). Nilgiri Mountain Railway (UNESCO Toy Train)

The 46-km UNESCO World Heritage Toy Train from Mettupalayam (350 m) to Ooty (2,240 m) — built in 1908. Steam-locomotive (rack-and-pinion) ride climbing through 16 tunnels, 250 bridges and impossible gradients. 5 hours one way. Book 90+ days ahead.

Ooty Botanical Gardens

55-acre gardens (1848) — 650+ plant species, the famous 20-million-year-old fossil tree, the Italian-style ornamental garden. Hosts the spectacular Ooty Flower Show in May.

Ooty Lake

Built in 1824 by John Sullivan (the founder of Ooty). 65-acre artificial lake. Boating, sunset photography. Touristy but lovely.

Doddabetta Peak

The highest peak in Tamil Nadu (2,637 m), 10 km from town. Telescope house at top with stunning Nilgiri views — on clear days you can see Coimbatore plains, Mysore plateau, Mukurthi peak.

Nilgiri Tea Estates & Tea Museum

Several plantations open to visitors. The Tea Museum at Glendale Estate, Coonoor (12 km from Ooty) traces the history of Nilgiri tea since 1859.

Coonoor & Sim’s Park

20 km from Ooty — quieter than Ooty, often described as “what Ooty was 20 years ago”. Sim’s Park has 1,000 plant species in 12 acres. Lamb’s Rock and Dolphin’s Nose viewpoints are stunning.

Pykara Lake & Falls

20 km from Ooty — picturesque dam and waterfalls. Boating available. The drive through eucalyptus forest is beautiful.

Avalanche Lake

28 km — gorgeous quiet lake at 2,000 m. Limited entry (forest department permit required) — a true escape.

Government Rose Garden

Asia’s largest rose garden — 20,000 varieties of roses on a hilltop. Best in May–June.

Mukurthi National Park & Mudumalai

50 km — protected wildlife with Nilgiri Tahr, tigers, elephants. Mudumalai (60 km) borders Bandipur (Karnataka) and Wayanad (Kerala).

Closest airport: Coimbatore (CJB) — 85 km / 2.5 hr drive. The fastest option.

By Rail

Closest mainline: Coimbatore Junction (CBE) — 86 km. Then take the Nilgiri Toy Train from Mettupalayam (MTP) 50 km away (5 hr ride).

By Road

Coimbatore 85 km (3 hr), Bangalore 270 km (6 hr), Mysore 130 km (4 hr). The drive up the 36 hairpin bends from Mettupalayam is iconic. Book private cabs.
