About Pahalgam

A taste of Pahalgam

About Pahalgam — Valley of Shepherds

Pahalgam (“Valley of Shepherds”) is pure storybook Kashmir — pine valleys, river-side meadows, snow peaks, and the kind of view that movies are filmed in (and many are). Set at 2,200 m on the banks of the gushing Lidder river, Pahalgam is the gateway to the Amarnath Yatra (the cave shrine pilgrimage), the start of the legendary Aru Valley and Betaab Valley drives, and the launching point for several Himalayan treks. Far quieter than Gulmarg or Srinagar, Pahalgam feels like a Swiss alpine village — except the food is better and the welcome warmer.

Best Time to Visit

  • April – October — pleasant (10–25 °C). Peak season.
  • July – August — Amarnath yatra; Pahalgam is the base camp.
  • March – May — snow patches still visible; gorgeous
  • September – October — autumn chinar leaves, golden valleys
  • December – February — heavy snow. Most attractions closed; only the brave stay.

Top Attractions

Aru Valley

12 km from Pahalgam at 2,400 m — possibly the prettiest meadow in Kashmir. Pine-fringed grassy slopes, the Lidder river running through, snow peaks framing the valley. Pony rides, gentle hikes. The Aru Valley to Lidderwat trek (12 km) is a classic.

Betaab Valley

15 km — named after the 1983 Bollywood film Betaab shot here. Manicured park-style valley with the Lidder river. Touristy but undeniably beautiful.

Chandanwari (Amarnath Base)

16 km from Pahalgam at 2,895 m — base camp for the Amarnath Yatra (32 km trek to the holy ice-lingam cave). Glaciers, snow bridges, pony rides. Open mid-June to mid-August for pilgrims.

Lidder River & Trout Fishing

The Lidder river is famous for brown trout (introduced by the British in 1900s). Trout fishing permits available (₹1,000–2,000/day) at the J&K Fisheries Department.

Baisaran (“Mini Switzerland”)

5 km from Pahalgam, reached by 30-min pony ride or short trek. Lush meadow on a plateau with panoramic views. Often compared to Swiss alpine valleys. Lovely for a picnic.

Mamleshwar Temple

Ancient Shiva temple on the bank of the Lidder, dating to the 12th century — still active, simple stone construction.

Tulian Lake (Trek)

11 km uphill from Pahalgam at 3,684 m — turquoise alpine lake fed by glacial streams. Strenuous 4-hour ascent, suitable for trekkers only. Often frozen until June.

Sheshnag Lake (Amarnath Trek)

11 km from Chandanwari at 3,590 m — one of the most spectacular high-altitude lakes in India. The Amarnath route passes here. Half-frozen even in summer.

Kolahoi Glacier (Trek)

The 16-km Aru-Lidderwat-Kolahoi trek (2-3 days) is one of Kashmir’s classic high-altitude treks — taking you to a glacier face at 4,200 m.

Pahalgam Golf Course

9-hole course at 2,400 m — beautiful summer setting, much quieter than Gulmarg.
