About Srinagar — The Floating City

Srinagar’s Dal Lake is one of the world’s most photographed waterfronts — willow-lined, ringed by Mughal gardens, and dotted with carved wooden houseboats waiting to host you for a night that feels like a poem. The summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir, Srinagar sits at 1,585 m in the Kashmir Valley between the Pir Panjal and the Greater Himalayas. Add the gorgeous Mughal Gardens (Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi), the floating vegetable market, the spice-and-saffron souks of the old city, and the haunting Hazratbal Shrine — and Srinagar becomes one of the most distinctive, romantic destinations in India.

Best Time to Visit

• April – October — pleasant (10–28 °C). Houseboats and shikara rides at their best.
• March – April — almond & tulip blossoms (Asia’s largest tulip garden opens late March)
• September – October — golden Chinar leaves, autumn colours, perfect light
• December – February — heavy snow, Dal Lake partially freezes, magical but cold (-5 to 5 °C)
• July – August — popular escape from Indian heat (15–28 °C)

Top Attractions

Dal Lake & Houseboats

The 18-sq-km lake — the soul of Srinagar. Stay a night on a traditional houseboat (shikara) — wood-carved 4-bedroom luxury “floating hotels” anchored along the Boulevard Road. The shikara ride at sunrise (₹600–800/hour) — through the lily-padded canals and floating vegetable market — is unforgettable.

Mughal Gardens — Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi

The Mughal emperors built these terraced Persian-style char-bagh gardens 400+ years ago.

• Shalimar Bagh (1619) — built by Jahangir for Nur Jahan. 12 hectares of cascading water channels and chinar trees.
• Nishat Bagh (1633) — “Garden of Joy” — 12 terraces ascending from the Dal Lake
• Chashme Shahi (1632) — smallest but with the famous spring water that’s said to have healing properties
• Pari Mahal & Verinag — additional Mughal sites

Hazratbal Shrine

The most sacred Muslim site in Kashmir — believed to house a strand of Prophet Mohammed’s hair (Moe-e-Muqaddas). The shrine is on the northern bank of Dal Lake, with white-marble dome and gardens. The relic is displayed only on special occasions.

Shankaracharya Temple

The oldest temple in Kashmir — perched on a 1,100-ft hill (Takht-e-Sulaiman). Built 200 BC, restored by Shankaracharya 9th century AD. 360° views of Srinagar and Dal Lake at sunset. Be aware of security checks.

Floating Vegetable Market (5–6 AM)

Each pre-dawn, hundreds of farmers from the Dal Lake’s floating gardens row their shikaras laden with vegetables to a single anchor point — the world’s only floating wholesale market. Magical experience.

Old City — Lal Chowk & Jama Masjid

The 1394 wooden Jama Masjid (with 378 wooden pillars), the bustling Lal Chowk square, the Sufi shrine of Khanqah-e-Moula (1395, intricate Pahari papier-mâché ceiling), and the spice-and-saffron souks of Maharaj Gunj.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden

Asia’s largest tulip garden — 1.5 million bulbs in 70+ varieties bloom for 3-4 weeks (late March–April). One of the world’s most spectacular flower gardens.

Pari Mahal (Fairy Palace)

17th-century 6-tier garden palace built by Dara Shikoh (Shah Jahan’s son). Beautifully restored, lit at night, with stunning views over Srinagar.

Sonamarg & Gulmarg (day trips)

Sonamarg (80 km, “Meadow of Gold”) — base for the Amarnath yatra and Thajiwas glacier trek. Gulmarg (50 km) — see separate destination page.

How to Reach

By Air

Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR) — 12 km from city. Daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Jammu, Leh.

By Rail

Banihal Station (BAHL) connects to Jammu via the Banihal-Qazigund tunnel; from Banihal it’s 100 km road to Srinagar. Most use airport.

By Road

Jammu 270 km (8–9 hr by NH44 — through Banihal and Jawahar Tunnel). Avoid in winter when avalanches block the road. Delhi 850 km (16+ hr — best done via Jammu in 2 days).

Travel Tips

• 3 days minimum — 1 day Mughal Gardens, 1 day houseboat & shikara, 1 day Sonamarg/Gulmarg
• Houseboat tips: book through reputable operators (KH Tours, Welcome Tours, Deluxe / Super Deluxe / Heritage classes). Avoid touts at the airport.
• Carry warm clothes year-round — chilly even in summer evenings. Wool shawl essential.
• Pashmina shopping: only buy at certified Government Emporium (the only true Kashmiri Pashmina is hand-spun and woven; cheap imitations are everywhere)
• Saffron at Pampore — buy from registered farmers, not Srinagar tourist shops
• Keep updated with the local situation (curfews / strikes happen) — check before flying
• Visit during Tulip Festival (late March – April) for India’s most spectacular flower bloom
• Combine with Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg for a 7-day Kashmir circuit
• Reverse the typical itinerary — start with Pahalgam / Sonamarg, end with houseboat (so you finish on a high)
