A taste of Madurai
About Madurai — The Temple City
Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India — 2,500 years of history wrapped around a single, awe-inspiring temple. The Meenakshi Amman Temple with its towering rainbow gopurams (some over 50 m, covered in 33,000 sculptures) is one of the largest, oldest and most colourful Hindu temples in the world. The 24-hour life around the temple — flower garlands, brass-work bazaars, the ritual carrying of Lord Shiva’s bedding to Meenakshi’s chamber every night — is half the experience. Add the Thirumalai Nayak Palace, the Gandhi Memorial Museum and Madurai’s famous fragrant jasmine — and Madurai becomes one of South India’s most powerful cultural destinations.

- April – June — extremely hot (38+ °C).
- October – December — North-east monsoon brings rain.
