Few states pack as much of India’s spiritual and intellectual heritage into one geography. Home to UNESCO sites, the holy Ganga, Patna’s Sikh Takhat, and one of India’s most underrated travel circuits.
Best Time to Visit
- October – March — ideal weather, comfortable for sightseeing and pilgrimage.
- April – June — extremely hot.
- July – September — heavy monsoon and Ganga floods.
Where to Go
Bodh Gaya — Where Buddha Attained Enlightenment

Nalanda & Rajgir
The 5th-century Nalanda University — the world’s first residential university and a UNESCO Heritage Site. Combine with nearby Rajgir’s Vulture Peak (where Buddha gave many sermons), the Vishwa Shanti Stupa and Saptaparni Cave.
Patna — The Capital
One of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, founded as Pataliputra under the Mauryan Empire.

Main airports: Patna (PAT), Gaya (GAY) — Gaya has international flights from Bangkok, Yangon, Colombo (peak Buddhist season Oct-Mar).
By Rail
Patna Junction is one of India’s busiest stations. Gaya Junction is the Buddhist Circuit hub.
By Road
