About Gujarat

Gujarat is the only Indian state that holds India’s longest coastline (1,600 km), the world’s largest white salt desert (the Rann of Kutch), the only home of the Asiatic Lion (Gir), the country’s first marine national park, primeval Buddhist caves, and the World Heritage city of Ahmedabad. It’s also the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi and one of the most vibrant business and cultural states of India.

From the salt-white moonscape of the Rann at full moon, to the lions of Gir, the towering Statue of Unity, the temples of Dwarka and Somnath, the stepwell of Rani Ki Vav, and the Sun Temple of Modhera — Gujarat packs more variety into a single state than almost anywhere else in India.

It’s also a paradise for birdwatchers — over 600 bird species have been recorded across its wetlands, salt marshes and deserts, including flamingos, pelicans, herons and the Egyptian vulture.

Best Time to Visit

  • November – February — the ideal window. Cool (12–25 °C), dry and the home stretch of the famous Rann Utsav festival on the salt desert. Best season for Gir National Park (lions are most active).
  • March – June — very hot (up to 45 °C). Stay in Saputara (the state’s only hill station) or visit indoor attractions like temples, museums and Statue of Unity in early morning / late evening.
  • July – September — monsoon. Lush greenery returns and waterfalls reactivate, but Rann of Kutch is inaccessible (the desert floods).

Where to Go in Gujarat

Rann of Kutch — The White Desert

One of the most surreal landscapes on the planet — an endless white salt flat that stretches to the horizon. Best experienced during the Rann Utsav (November–February), a 3-month tented festival with cultural performances, camel cart rides, full-moon walks and Kutchi handicrafts.

Highlights

  • White Salt Desert — full-moon nights are unforgettable
  • Rann Utsav tented village (Nov–Feb)
  • Kalo Dungar (Black Hill) — the highest point in Kutch with a 400-year-old Dattatreya temple
  • Dholavira — UNESCO Indus Valley archaeological site
  • Bhuj — gateway town with palaces and Kutchi handicraft villages

Gir National Park — Last Home of Asiatic Lions

The only place on Earth (outside Africa) where you can see lions in the wild. Gir is also home to leopards, sambar deer, jackals and over 300 bird species. Open mid-October to mid-June.

  • Devalia Safari Park — guaranteed lion sighting in fenced area (closed Wednesdays)
  • Crocodile spotting at Kamleshwar Dam
  • Combine with Somnath Temple (60 km away)

Statue of Unity — World’s Tallest Statue

At 182 m (597 ft), this tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. Set on the Narmada near Kevadia, the area has become a major tourism complex with light shows, gardens, and an aerial walkway.

Gujarat is one of India’s great vegetarian food regions — a sweet-savoury balance unique in Indian cooking.

  • Gujarati Thali — the legendary unlimited platter (dal, kadhi, rotli, sabzi, farsan, sweets, rice, papad, pickles, chaas).
  • Dhokla — spongy steamed gram-flour cake, the iconic snack.
  • Khaman, Khandvi, Fafda, Thepla — beloved farsan (savoury snacks).
  • Undhiyu — winter vegetable casserole cooked upside down underground.
  • Dhabeli & Vada Pav (Gujarati style) — street-food classics.
  • Lilo Chevdo — green Bikaneri-style snack, Gujarat’s favourite tea-time companion.

How to Reach

By Air

Main airports: Ahmedabad (AMD), Surat (STV), Vadodara (BDQ), Rajkot (RAJ) and Bhuj (BHJ). International connections from Ahmedabad to Gulf, Singapore and London.

By Rail

Gujarat is one of India’s best-connected rail networks — major junctions at Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot and Bhavnagar. The Vande Bharat Express connects Mumbai – Ahmedabad in 6 hours.

By Road

NH-48 (the Mumbai–Delhi corridor) runs straight through Gujarat. We recommend a private chauffeur-driven SUV for the full circuit — distances are big, especially to Kutch and Saurashtra. See our fleet.
