About Leh-Ladakh
Ladakh — the “Land of High Passes” — is India’s roof-of-the-world. A high-altitude desert (3,500–5,500 m) of moonscape mountains, turquoise lakes, ancient Buddhist monasteries and the most cinematic roads on the planet. Once on every traveller’s bucket list, Ladakh is now one of India’s most coveted destinations for road-trippers, photographers, monastery visitors and adventure seekers.
This is also the home of Tibetan Buddhism in India — gompas filled with murals and butter lamps, prayer flags fluttering on every pass, and a way of life that has barely changed in centuries.
Best Time to Visit
- June – September — the only window when roads are fully open. 15–30 °C days, 5–15 °C nights.
- July – August — peak season + Hemis Festival. Pre-book everything 3+ months ahead.
- October — fewer crowds, golden poplar trees, but Pangong Tso starts freezing.
- November – April — Ladakh closes off by road. Only flights operate. Chadar Trek on the frozen Zanskar river runs late January to mid-February.
Important: Acclimatise in Leh for at least 24–48 hours before going higher. AMS (acute mountain sickness) is real — drink water, no alcohol, no exertion on day 1.

The heart of Ladakh — narrow market lanes, Tibetan monasteries, the old palace and a backdrop of 6,000 m peaks.

Pangong Tso — The Iconic Lake
The 134 km blue-and-turquoise lake straddling India and China — featured in the climax of 3 Idiots. Stay overnight in tented camps or the village of Spangmik for sunrise on the water.
Nubra Valley — Sand Dunes & Bactrian Camels
The “Valley of Flowers” reached over Khardung La (5,359 m) — once one of the world’s highest motorable passes. Sand dunes at Hunder with rare double-humped Bactrian camels — left over from the Silk Route.

Tso Moriri — Quiet Cousin of Pangong
A higher, quieter, more remote lake at 4,522 m. The drive through Tso Kar and the Korzok village experience are spectacular.
Zanskar Valley — Off-the-Grid
The most remote part of Ladakh, accessed via Padum. Phugtal Monastery built into a cliff face is unmissable. The legendary Chadar Trek on the frozen Zanskar river runs in Jan–Feb only.
Kargil & Drass
The high-altitude town of Kargil, the war memorial at Drass (one of the coldest inhabited places on Earth), and the alien landscape of Suru Valley.
Ladakhi Cuisine

How to Reach
By Air
Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh (IXL) with daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Srinagar. Flying in directly puts you at 3,500 m — acclimatise carefully.
By Road
Two legendary routes (open mid-May to October):
- Manali → Leh (490 km, 2 days) over Rohtang, Baralacha, Tanglang La
- Srinagar → Leh (420 km, 2 days) over Zoji La, with stops at Kargil and Lamayuru — the gentler altitude-acclimatisation route
